Reversing Essure Or IVF: Which Is Better?

Which treatment is better: reversing an Essure or IVF? The preliminary data provided by Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center suggest in-vitro may offer the higher pregnancy success rate when compared to Essure reversal. The reversal specialists offer readers clarification about what IVF success really means and also provide reasons why women may still choose Essure reversal over IVF.

Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center have published a review comparing of the pregnancy success of Essure Reversal with the pregnancy success of in-vitro fertilization.

We offer a clear understanding of what the average chance of IVF success really means for an individual woman and also discuss reasons why many of our patients will still choose Essure reversal over IVF.

Essure Reversal Or In-Vitro Fertilization?

Chances of Getting Pregnant After Tubal Ligation Reversal

When a woman wants to have a baby, she can have the most emotional and gut wrenching feelings in her heart day after day. However, when a woman has had her tubes tied and then realizes that she made a big mistake, the overwhelming sense of guilt and anguish can be too much to bear. She may have changed her mind due to a life change such as the loss of another child or even a new marriage. No matter what the reason, her primary goal becomes how to improve her chances of getting pregnant after having a tubal ligation.

She might go to her gynecologist who would possibly give her incorrect information that the only way she could get pregnant is by having an in vitro fertilization. Anyone who has ever checked into IVF knows that it's extremely expensive and it does not have an overly high success rate. In fact, women who have experienced infertility and have done IVF treatments will often tell you that they spent their life savings doing these treatments month after month. Some women are successful and end up having children. However, there are many others who spent tens of thousands of dollars only to end up with no baby.

It should be good news for women who have had a tubal ligation to know that there is a procedure called a tubal ligation reversal. This procedure is similar to a man's vasectomy reversal as the tubes are reattached so that in an egg can move down the fallopian tubes. Although they are not always successful, nothing is. However, once a woman has a tubal ligation reversal procedure, she has the ability to get pregnant each month which is unlike IVF. With IVF, a woman would only have the chance to get pregnant at the time she has the procedure. Once that month has passed, unless she wants to pay more money, her chances of getting pregnant are eliminated.

During a recent 8 year study conducted by the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, it was found that the pregnancy rate after having tubal reversal was much higher than that of IVF in every age group. Because a woman can get pregnant month after month once having had a reversal, the chances of getting pregnant continue to increase over time. Therefore, the chances of getting pregnant with a tubal ligation reversal surgery are much higher and more stable than those of IVF. If a woman wants to continue trying to have a child, it would be best for her to invest her money in having a tubal reversal surgery rather than repeated IVF unless there is some other medical reason why her doctor thinks she should do so.

New Pregnancies Announced This Week at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center

The Weekly Pregnancy Report for Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is published on the Tubal Reversal Message Board. During the week of April 19 – April 25, 2008, 20 new pregnancies were reported by Dr. Berger’s patients after their tubal reversal procedures. The women’s ages ranged from 33 to 40, and the fallopian tube lengths after their tubes were untied ranged from 3.0 cm to 7.5 cm. The tubal ligation methods among these women included Hulka clips, Falope rings, bipolar coagulation, and ligation/resection. At present, more than 1000 babies have been born following tubal ligation reversal by Dr. Berger.

Date of Tubal Reversal: 5/1/07
Date of Pregnancy Test: 4/19/08
Due Date: January 19th???, 2009
Remarks: I’m not entirely sure how this happened!!! LOL - I must have ovulated right after my period stopped??? I don’t really ‘feel’ pregnant yet, the only reason I tested was because I thought I started bleeding/spotting again 2 days after my cycle stopped. Then it stopped after 2 days and started again 2 days later. I’ve never ever had spotting or any kind of break thru bleeding-except when I was pregnant. Also, I was having pain on my right side that was strong enough to wake me from sleep Friday night. We did the hpt and that line came of fast. We aren’t talking a faint line, like I would have expected on CD16!!!(if any line at all) My Dr. sent us to the Hospital since I was having pain on Rt. side. The pain went away and my hcg level was 549. Although it was too early to see anything, they did an ultrasound anyway. Nothing. I test today for 2nd level. I still have some spotting, not like I did on Saturday. Just playing the waiting game and praying for our miracle. Funny how life changes in a moment! Thanks!!

Remarks: I have had 2 miscarriages and one ectopic (lost my right tube). We weren’t trying because my HSG showed scar tissue even though I did see with my own eyes the dye go all the way through. We weren’t TTC since I was told I didn’t ovulate without Clomid (I have never test positive for ovulation with test sticks or a fertility monitor without being one Clomid). We are in total shock and of coarse overjoyed and scared at the same time. My 1st HCG number at CD 31 was 21 at CD 33 39 (that was 45 hours apart). I will keep you updated.

Date of Tubal Reversal: November 1, 2008
Date of Pregnancy Test: April 13, 2008 & April 14, 2008
Due Date: December 6, 2008
Remarks: I used ovulation test sticks (7 stick packs), monitored daily temperature and monitored my cycle. In March (period began 3/1) the peak ovulation day was never indicated. In April I had what appeared to be a very brief (2 1/2 days) period beginning 4/1. Noticed swollen and tender breast on 4/10. Began my usual ovulation stick test on 4/11. On the morning of 4/13 I took both an ovulation test and a pregnancy test and the pregnancy test came up positive. Noticed some spotting that day. Had a quantitative analysis done at ob/gyn on 4/14 which confirmed the pregnancy. Monday 4/14 Progesterone 3.87 and HCG 144.1. Due to the low numbers I was put on Progesterone suppositories and pelvic rest. Wednesday 4/16 Progesterone 22.25 and HCG 176.8. Today, Friday 4/18 HCG 299.00. I continue daily spotting and remain on Progesterone suppositories. I am scheduled for another quantitative analysis on Monday 4/21.

Tubal Reversal Sucess Rates

People often wonder "Even if I do get the tubal reversal procedure done, what are the chances I'll conceive?"

Dr. Berger of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal center is the only doctor who tracks his specific success rate – others doctors will just quote the industry average. Dr. Berger has taken the time and the expense to meticulously keep track of patients pregnancy and birth rates and make sure the procedure is as pain-free as possible.

Detailed Tubal Reversal Success Rates Here

One way to determine what your success rate may be is with the operative report from your tubal ligation. This can be obtained from the doctor who performed the surgery or from the medical records department of the hospital where your procedure was performed.

If you would like to forward this information to us, Dr. Berger will review the operative report at no charge and we can contact you regarding possible outcomes for you following reversal surgery. You may fax the records to us at 870-934-9211. Please include all contact information (phone and e-mail) when faxing your records.

If you have questions about your chances to get pregnant after a tubal reversal, please feel free to contact me.

Julia Smith, RN
