New Pregnancies Announced This Week at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center

The Weekly Pregnancy Report for Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center is published on the Tubal Reversal Message Board. During the week of April 19 – April 25, 2008, 20 new pregnancies were reported by Dr. Berger’s patients after their tubal reversal procedures. The women’s ages ranged from 33 to 40, and the fallopian tube lengths after their tubes were untied ranged from 3.0 cm to 7.5 cm. The tubal ligation methods among these women included Hulka clips, Falope rings, bipolar coagulation, and ligation/resection. At present, more than 1000 babies have been born following tubal ligation reversal by Dr. Berger.

Remarks: I’m not entirely sure how this happened!!! LOL - I must have ovulated right after my period stopped??? I don’t really ‘feel’ pregnant yet, the only reason I tested was because I thought I started bleeding/spotting again 2 days after my cycle stopped. Then it stopped after 2 days and started again 2 days later. I’ve never ever had spotting or any kind of break thru bleeding-except when I was pregnant. Also, I was having pain on my right side that was strong enough to wake me from sleep Friday night. We did the hpt and that line came of fast. We aren’t talking a faint line, like I would have expected on CD16!!!(if any line at all) My Dr. sent us to the Hospital since I was having pain on Rt. side. The pain went away and my hcg level was 549. Although it was too early to see anything, they did an ultrasound anyway. Nothing. I test today for 2nd level. I still have some spotting, not like I did on Saturday. Just playing the waiting game and praying for our miracle. Funny how life changes in a moment! Thanks!!

Remarks: I have had 2 miscarriages and one ectopic (lost my right tube). We weren’t trying because my HSG showed scar tissue even though I did see with my own eyes the dye go all the way through. We weren’t TTC since I was told I didn’t ovulate without Clomid (I have never test positive for ovulation with test sticks or a fertility monitor without being one Clomid). We are in total shock and of coarse overjoyed and scared at the same time. My 1st HCG number at CD 31 was 21 at CD 33 39 (that was 45 hours apart). I will keep you updated.

Remarks: I used ovulation test sticks (7 stick packs), monitored daily temperature and monitored my cycle. In March (period began 3/1) the peak ovulation day was never indicated. In April I had what appeared to be a very brief (2 1/2 days) period beginning 4/1. Noticed swollen and tender breast on 4/10. Began my usual ovulation stick test on 4/11. On the morning of 4/13 I took both an ovulation test and a pregnancy test and the pregnancy test came up positive. Noticed some spotting that day. Had a quantitative analysis done at ob/gyn on 4/14 which confirmed the pregnancy. Monday 4/14 Progesterone 3.87 and HCG 144.1. Due to the low numbers I was put on Progesterone suppositories and pelvic rest. Wednesday 4/16 Progesterone 22.25 and HCG 176.8. Today, Friday 4/18 HCG 299.00. I continue daily spotting and remain on Progesterone suppositories. I am scheduled for another quantitative analysis on Monday 4/21.

Scheduleing Tubal Reversal Surgery

How Far In Advance Do You Need To Contact Dr. Berger In Order To Schedule Surgery For Tubal Reversal?

Women who choose Dr. Gary Berger as their tubal reversal doctor are anxious to schedule surgery for the first available surgery dates. Julia Smith, Nurse Administrator at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, responds that appointments typically fill up arond 4 weeks ahead of time with Monday and Friday appointments the first choice for most women. If a patient has flexibility regarding the day of the week they choose for their appointment, tubal reversal surgery can sometimes be scheduled within 3 weeks.

Here's my dilemma... my husband says that we can do this in april.... but we won't be able to pay for it until probably sometime in march....(in process right now of selling and buying a house, so we want to get that wrapped up first)
My question is this: how far in advance do you need to contact in order to schedule. i want to pay in full right away when i do schedule... and i really don't want to schedule and then have to wait like 6 months! I've already been waiting for 1.5 years to be able to have this done.

I'd love if anyone can share how the scheduling worked for them.

Hey, well if you look on the website to my understanding you can schedule right away but it has to be paid in full at least 3 weeks before your surgery and all your tests and paper work needs to be forwarded to Dr. Berger's office asap.

Hi, Nytesong.
There are two options for scheduling/paying for tubal reversal surgery.
If you would like the discounted fee, you would send full payment of the $5900 the day after you call us to schedule the appointment. If you are paying the standard fee of $6900, you can schedule and hold an appointment by sending us $250 and the balance of $6650 would be sent three weeks prior to the surgery date.

The Spring months fill up faster than other months, so April may be nearly full if you wait until late in March to call. If you call the first part of April, Monday and Friday appointments may be full, be we should be able to get you scheduled if you have some flexibility regarding the day of the week.

Our goal is to help you schedule for a time that is convenient for you, so stay in touch over the next month and we will keep you updated on April appointments!

Outpatient Tubal Reversal Procedure

Is Tubal Reversal Surgery Safer in a Hospital?

In a recent email inquiry, someone asked if it would be safer to have tubal reversal surgery in a hospital. My answer to her: "It is much safer to have tubal reversal surgery performed at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center than in a hospital." Roughly 100,000 people wind up with a potentially deadly infection during hospital treatment in the US each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Most of these dangerous bacteria are transmitted by hospital staff from sick patients.

When it comes to cleanliness and strict adherence to infection control procedures, there is no medical or surgical facility better than Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Hospitals are the right place for treating complicated medical or surgical problems, but they are not the best place for healthy people to have tubal reversal surgery!

Infection and Medication Error Risks in Hospitals

Roughly 100,000 people wind up with a potentially deadly infection during hospital treatment in the US each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Hospital-acquired infections (also called “nosocomial” infections) are particularly dangerous, since hospital germs are especially resistant to antibiotics. One example in the news lately the bacteria called methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Most of these dangerous bacteria are transmitted by hospital staff from sick patients.

Hospital patients get the wrong drug one time out of five, according to a study by Auburn University.

Patient-safety incidents continue to rise in American hospitals. The largest increases involve hospital-acquired infections and post operative sepsis (overwhelming infection).

A Chicago Tribune study revealed that serious violations of infection-control standards have been found in the vast majority of hospitals nationally. Since 1995, more than 75 percent of all hospitals have been cited for significant cleanliness and sanitation violations. This report says:

A hidden epidemic of life-threatening infections is contaminating America’s hospitals, needlessly killing tens of thousands of patients each year. Nearly three-quarters of the deadly infections are preventable, the result of unsanitary facilities, germ-laden instruments, unwashed hands and other lapses.

Deaths linked to hospital germs represent the fourth leading cause of mortality among Americans, behind heart disease, cancer and strokes, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These infections kill more people each year than car accidents, fires and drowning combined.

“The number of people needlessly killed by hospital infections is unbelievable, but the public doesn’t know anything about it,” said Dr. Barry Farr, a leading infection-control expert and president of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.

When it comes to cleanliness and strict adherence to infection control procedures, there is no medical or surgical facility better than Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. Using The Best Surgical And Anesthetic Techniques

Tradionally, tubal reversal surgery microsurgery has been a major in-hospital operation with several days of hospital stay and surgical techniques that cause postoperative pain and disability. They don't think about how to minimize postoperative pain while performing a surgical procedure. Patients, of course, would prefer that surgeons avoid techniques that cause pain after they awake.

Postoperative pain following abdominal surgery is due mostly to trauma to the muscles and connective tissues in the abdominal wall when using traditional surgical techniques. Abdominal retractors (metal instruments that pull back on the skin, connective tissues, and muscles to provide exposure of the pelvic organs), cause bruising and reduced blood flow to tissues during the time they are being held apart by the retractors. In my experience - having performed over 6000 outpatient tubal reversals - the operation is best performed using no retractors at all other than just the surgeon's fingers, the gentlest of all surgical instruments.

Surgical packs (large gauze pads) traditionally are placed into the abdomen to push the intestines away from the pelvic organs. These irritate the intestines and are unnecessary in most cases.

Another technique that prevents postoperative pain is injecting a local anesthetic, even though the patient is asleep, in the areas where surgery is performed . This effective technique is called "pre-emptive analgesia".

These are some of the methods that I use that make tubal reversal comfortable as outpatient surgery. These techniques allow patients to awake in comfort and avoid the need for repeated injections of narcotic pain medications. Making surgery comfortable improves patient outcomes, avoids the need for routine postoperative hospital care, and results in low cost tubal reversal.

The only change I would recommend is that it not only give you the option to change the word you misspelled, but you have the option to delete the word all together without closing out of the program and doing it manually.

Example : I jus twas metioning that yesterday.

Both "jus" and "twas" will be highlighted seperately. So you have to correct the first one by typing "just" and the second one by typing "was" instead of being able to type "just was" in the first error and deleting the second one.

Just something I noticed. I am very glad to see that this option is now available thought. Lord knows I need it!!
